In attempting to explain stress as more of a dynamic process, Richard Lazarus developed the transactional theory of stress and coping (TTSC) (Lazarus, 1966; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984), which presents stress as a product of a transaction between a person (including multiple systems: cognitive, physiological, affective, psychological, neurological) and his or her complex environment.
The influence of Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) transactional theory of stress and coping is remarkable and remains the cornerstone of psychological stress and coping research across multiple fields. Here is a monumental work that continues in the tradition pioneered by co-author Richard Lazarus in his classic book Psychological Stress and the Coping Process. Dr. Dr. Lazarus and his collaborator, Dr. Susan Folkman, present here a detailed theory of psychological stress, building on the concepts of cognitive appraisal and coping which have become major themes of theory and investigation.

Coping is the process of executing that response. Although these processes are most easily described as a linear sequence, Lazarus has emphasized that they do not occur in an unbroken stream. Rather, an outcome of one process may reinvoke a preceding process. Lazarus states that stress is experienced when a person perceives that the “demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilise." this is called the 'transactional model of stress and coping.' Whether a police officer uses adaptive or maladaptive approaches depends on the officer’s understanding the stressful situation, making sense of it, and developing appropriate responses to it (Lazarus 1967). Lazarus "notes the connection between his idea of 'defensive reappraisals' or cognitive coping and Freud's concept of 'ego-defenses'", coping strategies thus overlapping with a person's defense mechanisms. Developed in 1984, Lazarus stress is defined as an “imbalance between demands and resources.” What the two researchers meant by this was that every person has resources and skills available to them. When talking about stress, these skills are known as coping mechanisms. People develop coping mechanism both during early life and adulthood.
